Therefore, early diagnosis is critical as is optimal appropriate investigation and management.

Screening for Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)a common complication of Diabetes and Hypertension and in smokers, which can put one at risk of limb loss. Interestingly African Americans and Caribbean people are at a higher risk of PAD as are persons living with diabetes. A complete history and consultation is taken to uncover any other issues related to the lower limb that may need further attention.

Our team specializes in providing expert care for diabetic wounds, recognizing the importance of prompt and effective treatment for those living with diabetes. Due to the slower healing process in diabetic individuals, it’s critical to address wounds with urgency.

Please be aware that puncture wounds are treated as surgical emergencies, and any wound showing signs of infection requires immediate attention. In individuals with diabetes, the elderly, or those with nerve damage, the usual signs of infection may not be present, making early consultation essential.

In Barbados, more than 300 amputations are performed annually due to complications from wounds. However, you don’t have to be part of this statistic. Avoid attempting to manage wound care on your own and do not delay seeking professional help.
